IN 2011 the Sydney Mardi Gras aka Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras became fully intersex inclusive under the LGBTQI acronym.
Now the 2012 Mardi Gras sees London-resident, expatriate documentary filmmaker Maxx Ginnane’s film on South African athlete Caster Semenya, Too Fast to be a Woman?, screened in the Mardi Gras Film Festival on Saturday February 25, 2012.
OII Australia is proud to consider Maxx a good friend and ally of intersex people around the world and we look forward to seeing her long-awaited film.
As Caster Semenya achieved her dream of winning the 800m World Championship rumours of a failed gender test spread into a vicious and voyeuristic media storm. Caster’s triumph soon became public humiliation, questions about her being intersex were asked, and international lawyers and scientists began to argue over what it is to be and compete as a woman. Australian documentarian Maxx Ginnane spent much of the year by Semenya’s side resulting in this poignant and important documentary.
